May 1st Rally & March: Protesters Stand Up for the Right to March on the RNC to Stop the War

Thursday, May 1, 11:00 a.m., Minnesota State Capitol, West Steps , 75 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, St. Paul

Activists will be demonstrating on May 1 for a permit for a massive anti-war march to the Xcel Center on September 1st during the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Protesters will gather at the Minnesota State Capitol. There will be a rally, followed by a march past the Xcel Center and will return to the State Capitol. At the rally, speakers will give an update on the battle for permits and protest space during the convention. The federal courts will hear the coalition's case for permits on May 16th.

Jodie Evans, national co-founder of Codepink: Women for Peace, will be speaking at the rally.

Katrina Plotz, an organizer with the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War explains, "We will continue to rally at the Capitol and march on the Xcel Center on the first of every other month including September 1st. Today we march to demand permits for a national anti-war demonstration during the RNC. Thousands are planning to travel to St. Paul from all over the country to demonstrate their opposition to the ongoing U.S. war and occupation of Iraq. We have the right to speak and act against this unjust war, and to be seen and heard on the streets of St. Paul during the RNC."

Organizers feel that city officials have been dragging their feet on granting permits for the coalition's major anti-war march on September 1, 2008, set to coincide with the Republican National Convention (RNC) being held in St. Paul at that time.

May 1 will also be an important day for protests for immigrant rights. Both local and national immigrant rights coalitions have signed on to the call for an anti-war protest on the first day of the convention. Protests locally and nationally will be calling for immigrants and their allies to march on the Xcel Center on September 1.
