Press Conference:
Tuesday, 1 pm @ MN State Capitol Building, front steps

“Why I am marching on September First” will be the theme of a news conference Tuesday, August 26 at 1 pm in front of the State Capitol building in St. Paul.

People from a mix of backgrounds will be part of the panel at the news conference. The speakers not only plan to participate themselves but are urging many others to join the September 1 anti-war march on the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

Speakers will include: Coleen Rowley, peace activist and former FBI agent; Phyllis Walker, President AFSCME Local 3800; Bridgette McDonald, Catholic sister and retired school teacher; and Mohammad Hassan, President of the Somalia Institute for Peace and Justice and Vice Chair of Somali Cause.

The September 1 protest, organized by the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War is being held to call for an end to the war in Iraq and for funds to be used to meet human needs such as housing and health care.

Jess Sundin of the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War said, “The Tuesday news conference will show a range of people and communities who are organizing for a large turnout at the September 1 protest. The protest, which has a permit from the city of St. Paul, is a place where all who oppose the war can feel welcome.”

“During the National Republican Convention, we must not forget that the majority of the people of the U.S. and of Iraq are united in their opposition to U.S. policy in Iraq and want the troops to be brought home. We will be there to represent that majority,” said Katrina Poltz of the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War.
